Today was a somewhat productive day at the "farm." The Hus-Man and I went to Lowe's and starting discussing the new digs for the Girls...in the middle of the lumber section. We took up the entire aisle as we laid out various lengths of boards to demonstrate the size of the coop. It was like Legos, but for big people (or chickens). We drew things on tiny pieces of paper and then priced it out. We ended up buying hardware cloth for a chicken corral.
The Hus-Man and I don't really do projects well together. There is always yelling and then someone's feelings get hurt and someone stomps off in a huff and nothing gets done. Not so today! We actually made a chicken corral...together...without yelling or stomping, - although the Hus-Man did throw the hardware cloth down the driveway after several attempts to try to bend the wiry bits of one end over the other end. The chicken corral (I got the idea from a friend who has much more experience than I do at raising chickens) is simply 10ft of hardware cloth, shaped into a circle by connecting the ends. The shaping...not so hard. The holding-of-the-end-pieces-in-place...much more complicated. We ended up (the Hus-Man is a genius) zip-tying the ends together with a little overlapage and, Voila!, we have a chicken corral that can be moved around the yard and keep the Girls safe as long as the Guard Lion cat does not figure out that she can jump in. (The Girls will not be left alone.)
Tomorrow the Girls will go on a field trip out in the yard if the weather is nice. Pictures to come!
Pictures!!! ;-)
